Follow this guide to prep and perfect your video interview skills.

1. Prepare in advance

   • Review your resume and job description to understand how your experience fits the role. This boosts confidence during the video call.

2. Show up on time

   • Start by being on time. You don't need to join 15 minutes early like an in-office interview, but make sure to start the video chat at the scheduled time.
   • Be prepared. Check if you have the right software installed and consider a test call with a friend to make sure your connection works fine.

3. Dress for success, even remotely

   • Dress smartly, at least from the waist up. (No one knows if you're wearing sweatpants with your fancy top!) Think about wearing a nice shirt or top, and tidy yourself up just like you would for a face-to-face meeting. This will not only impress your interviewer, but also make you feel confident and ready!

4. Think about your background

   • You would keep your house tidy if your future boss was visiting, right? Do the same for a video call! Find a clean, quiet spot to take the call. Let your housemates know so they won't walk behind you or make noise while you're talking about your job skills.

   

5. Make “eye contact” with the camera

• You might find it useful to put googly eyes next to your webcam. This can help you remember to look at the camera during the call. It looks like you're making eye contact, instead of just looking at your screen. Even if it's through a computer, eye contact can make you seem more connected and focused. It could really help you make a good impression on your interviewer.

   • Show your interviewer you're interested by listening carefully. You could nod your head to show you understand what they're saying and ask questions if needed. It's also a good idea to write notes. Have a notebook handy to write down things you want to remember from the interview, so you don't have to type loudly and interrupt the conversation.

2. Lighting and Sound Quality

   • For good lighting, try to sit near a window. If you can't, use a lamp or a selfie light. Make sure the light is soft and it should hit your face at about a 45-degree angle.
   • Using a headset can help your voice be heard clearly. It reduces background noises and echoes, making it easier and more pleasant for people to listen to you.

3. Don’t Do the Zoom Interview on Your Phone

   • While Zoom works on phones and tablets, it's best to use a computer for a Zoom interview. Using a phone might feel too casual and it can be hard to keep the device steady. Avoid this by using a computer if you can.
